Q:
I just signed in to the web-based application. Now what do I do?

A: The first thing to do is examine the client default settings and configure your Interests, Triggers, and delivery option Settings. Interests are predefined categories that serve as a broad filtering mechanism to the types of headlines you'll receive. Triggers serve as personal keywords to provide exact matching to article headline or story content, and will deliver alerts (regardless of Interests/categories) when a successful match is made. Delivery option Settings control how new incoming alerts will be delivered, including the alert popup and/or e-mail summary digests delivered to you in HTML or plain text. Please refer to the online documentation to learn more about Interests, Triggers, and Settings.

Q:
Why when I click on a headline does the corresponding alert popup NOT display?

A: The most common cause of this is due to your system running a browser-based popup blocking routine. To avoid this, you'll need to disable your popup blocking software prior to launching the web-based client again.

To do this, please exit/close your current session of the web-based client by clicking on the upper right "X" icon, return to the launch web page http://desktopnews.komotv.com/tnpl_komo/web_client, then disable your popup blocking software.

Once your popup blocking software is disabled within the browser displaying the launch page, re-launching the web-based client will inherit this disabled setting.

Q:
Why is a new tab created within the web-based client when I click on a headline or link?

A: Many tabbed-based browsers (Internet Explorer® 7 and Firefox®, for example) may default to displaying new information in a new tab as opposed to a new window. To target a new window, you'll need to set your corresponding preferences within your browser prior to launching the web-based client again.

To do this, please exit/close your current session of the web-based client by clicking on the upper right "X" icon, return to the launch web page http://desktopnews.komotv.com/tnpl_komo/web_client, then set your browser preferences to target a new window (instead of a new tab).

For Internet Explorer® 7, this setting can be found under the Tools > Internet Options form (under the Tabs section).

For Firefox®, this setting can be found under the Tools -> Options form.

Once your setting has been change to target a new window (instead of a new tab) from within the browser displaying the launch page, re-launching the web-based client will inherit this new setting.

Q:
How do I configure to receive ONLY e-mail digests (disable popup alerts)?

A: Once you have activated your account and set up your Interests categories and/or Trigger keywords, select the Settings tab, then select the Edit Settings button. Once the Desktop form is open for edit, uncheck the Display new alerts on my desktop... check box under the Desktop Delivery portion of the form.

Next select the Email tab. From within the Email form, activate the Deliver alert digests to my email account checkbox by clicking within the box then select the Save changes button. Note prior to saving, you may also want to change your preferred Format (HTML or plain-text for mobile devices) and Frequency (every one, two, four hours or once per day) from the default values.

After configuring your web-based application for e-mail only, you may now close the browser window and return only when you want to change either your Interests categories and/or Trigger keywords.

Note you can unsubscribe to the e-mail digests any time using the embedded link at the bottom of the e-mail.

Q:
Where do I find the help files / documentation for the web-based application?

A: All main tab window forms contain a help button in the lower right corner of the form.

For any given tab window, selecting the Help icon will bring up a separate window displaying the associated help information. Relevant topics within the help content itself will also be hypertext linked throughout the document, providing additional information.

Q:
How do I enter Trigger words to get alerts on certain words or phrases that matter to me?

A: From within the web-based application, select the Triggers tab. Next, click on the Edit Triggers button, which will open the Triggers form for edit.

This form allows you to enter up to 20 of your own words or phrases into the fields. Additionally, this tab allows you to select a Predefined Trigger List by clicking on the "View List" button, which (if defined) are used to augment your own set of Triggers with additional matching capabilities.

After your Triggers are entered and/or Predefined Trigger List is selected, select the "Save Changes" button to update your active Trigger list. Please refer to the online documentation for more information regarding Triggers.

Q:
When I attempt to enter certain words as a Trigger, I get an error stating "You must remove these particular words from your News Triggers list before it can be saved".

A: Some words are disallowed from use as Triggers because they may generate too many alerts due to their common usage in all news stories. Words like "the", "or", "for", etc., fit this category. Other words may generate only warnings, and as such, can remain in the active Trigger list. For more information with regard to disallowed Trigger words, please refer to Stop and Warning Words in the online documentation.

Q:
I'm running anti-virus / anti-popup software that appears to prevent viewing alerts. What do I need to do?

A: Many anti-virus programs and even some browsers contain built-in suppression of popups, ads, and / or images. The default settings of such software may interfere with the normal operation of this program.

For example, Norton Internet Security™ may require you to disable Ad Blocking, but not Popup Windows, as shown below.

For your particular software, experiment with similar configuration schemes beginning with the most conservative settings and reattempting to view your alerts between changes.

Q:
Some alert headlines appear in bold text and others are not. Some headlines also appear as italicized text. What does this mean?

A: Yet-to-be-viewed alerts display in bold text. Previously viewed alerts will display as un-bolded text, to help you quickly identify whether you've already read them or not.

Italicized text headlines denote articles that have been reissued and changed from that of the original broadcast. Previously read (un-bolded) headlines will re-bold and re-sort according to their newly published date and time.

Q:
Sometimes when I receive a popup alert, I see one or more words highlighted in yellow. What does this mean?

A: Words that appear in a subject header and match your personally-specified Trigger words or phrases will highlight in yellow as a visual indicator to what caused the alert to be delivered.

Q:
I receive alerts in Categories I am not interested in. How do I change that?

A: From within the web-based application, select the Interests tab. Next, click on the Edit interests button, which will open the Categories form for edit.

Clicking the checkbox associated with any category name will toggle its selection. Categories that reflect check marks are your selected categories. Please refer to the online documentation for more information regarding Interests.
